In All, Community

May is a time of the year that we honor the service and tremendous sacrifices our military
members have given for this great nation. May is also a time that we recognize the important
contributions, support, and sacrifices that are made by military spouses and their families.

In April of 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation setting Military Spouses Day
on the Friday before Mother’s Day. In his proclamation, President Regan honored all military
spouses by stating “As Volunteers, military spouses have provided exemplary service and
leadership in educational, community, recreational, religious, social and cultural endeavors. And
as parents and homemakers, they preserve the cornerstone of our Nation’s strength-The
American family”.

What President Reagan proclaimed in 1984, I not only see today but I see it growing and getting
larger with each passing moment. If you have ever been around a group of military spouses,
then you will know what I am talking about. Just being in the same room with these dynamic
individuals and you can feel their energy, commitment, and determination to tackle any obstacle
in their path. I don’t know that I have ever seen a group more determined to take on an issue
and make and a difference, not only in their family’s lives, but in their military family’s lives as
well.

Our friends at Armed Forces Insurance (AFI) are not only dedicated to helping military families
obtain peace of mind by providing insurance solutions and personal service that are custom fit
to meet a military family’s needs. AFI is also are proud to honor all military spouses with the
Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year (AFI MSOY) award which is also awarded
in May.

The AFI MSOY award program recognizes military spouses’ important contributions and
unwavering commitment to the military community. Spouses from multiple bases are recognized
for their local achievements and contributions. From there, a winner is selected for each branch
of service and finally an overall winner is chosen out of all of the branches.

However, the AFI MSOY program is much more than an award’s program. It is a community, a
feeling, a family. The AFI MSOY program brings together spouses from all parts of the globe
and offers programs such as Town Hall, which brings in engaging speakers to help empower,
inform, and educate spouses from across the world who are working to make a difference in
their own base communities. For more information on the AFI MSOY program, please feel free

To all of the military spouses and their families out there, I want to say thank you. Our service
men and women could not do what they do without the support of their spouses back home.
